Low literacy and plain English

Literacy is a persistent issue for adults in Ireland (1 in 6 people) and digital skills are also a serious issue for over half of adults in Ireland – 55% – (Cedefop, 2020).

A recent report also showed 29% of public don’t know where to learn digital skills, and 29% do not use online banking (July 2020 from Accenture).

Plain English doesn’t improve literacy skills directly but when you write and shape content using plain English guidelines it increases the chance of readers being able to read and understand your online and hard-copy information.

If you know someone who has a literacy difficulty and or a digital literacy skills, please tell them to contact NALA Freephone 1800 20 20 65. They can chat to one of our friendly staff and get advice about their learning options.
